August 19, 2022 Cruising Prince Christian Strait

We awaken to another Sea Day. Moved the clocks forward again, so we are on Greenland time, which makes sense since we are practically there. We are now two hours ahead of time at home.  The weather is beautiful and the ocean is calm. We have breakfast in the Grand Dining Room as usual, and take little note as to our precise location. We are scheduled to sail all day and night until we reach Paamiut,

August 18, 2022 Sea Day

The photo above has no particular significance, but is a good example of the care and creativity of the dozens of chefs who prepare our meals. Oceania’s claim is to have “the finest cuisine at sea,” and we will attest to that claim. The dish you see here is merely a dessert that Steve had at lunch – some kind of pudding with coconut pasted on to the rim of the glass. The presentation of everything

August 17, 2022 Isafjordur, Iceland and Westfjords

Overnight, we have traveled 206 nautical miles to the Westfjords, and are dropping an anchor at the largest town on the peninsula at 8:00am. As we cruise into the harbor, we see what a beautiful day it is and get a glimpse of the beautiful scenery we are in store for on our tour.  Entrance to Isafjordur Fish farm near harbor Town of Isafjordur, Iceland Our tour, entitled Dynjandi Waterfall and Local Village, will begin at

August 16, 2022 Reykjavik, Iceland

After such a busy day yesterday, and knowing that we will be boarding MS Sirena by 2:30pm today, we take our time getting started. Enjoying another wonderful breakfast buffet, packing up, checking out, and stowing our luggage until it’s time to go to the ship. We also take time to thank the young lady who we had managed to allow us to ride in the bus taking her Oceania guests to the ship and explain that

August 15, 2022 Reykjavik, Iceland and Golden Circle Tour

We awaken at 7am. The sun has been streaming in for almost three hours already, so we are quickly made aware of how far north we are (some northern parts if Iceland are actually slightly above the Arctic Circle). Even in mid-August, sunset is after 9pm. The other indication is the temperature – a cool 45 degrees Fahrenheit, forecast to reach a balmy high temperature of 52 degrees. It is a beautiful, mostly sunny day. We

August 13 and 14, 2022: Wallingford CT to Reykjavik, Iceland

Cathy and Steve are ‘on the road again.’ We are taking a cruise – in two segments – from Reykjavik, Iceland. It will last thirty-two days, ending on September 17th. Above is a map of the first segment that begins in Reykjavik and ends in Oslo. We came two days early to get an introduction to Reykjavik, the capital, and take the Golden Circle tour, the country’s most popular. Our adventure requires a 2,000-mile flight from

JANUARY 27TH    SEA DAY

JANUARY 27TH    SEA DAY
Steve woke up thinking that there had been a time change from Atlantic to Eastern, which would have set the clocks back an hour (essentially ‘gaining’ the hour we had ‘lost’ early in the cruise). He woke up very early. He thinks it’s 4am.  Cathy arises around 6:30am, and we decide then that breakfast should be taken in the Grand Dining Room. On our way there around 8:00am, we discover that the time change is for tomorrow

JANUARY 26TH   SEA DAY

JANUARY 26TH   SEA DAY
We are heading back to Miami. We are in the Old Bahama Channel, with Cuba at least twelve miles (the very last thing we would want is to wander into their territorial waters) on our port side. The ship is traveling at almost twenty nautical miles per hour, a pretty good clip. We’ve covered approximately 280 miles since we left St. Barts, and that leaves another 800 to go to reach the Port of Miami at

JANUARY 25TH    GUSTAVIA ST. BARTS
We arrive as scheduled at 7:00am. It is a beautiful, warm day, as they all have been on this cruise. It is no wonder that the Caribbean is mobbed with tourists and cruise ships during the winter, which is the annual dry season here. This is the view from our stateroom balcony, in a three-photo series: 7:00am Pain de Sucre, St. Barts 10:00am Pain de Sucre 3:00pm Pain de Sucre, St. Barts We are at anchor, as

JANUARY 24TH   ROAD TOWN   BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

JANUARY 24TH   ROAD TOWN   BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS
We arrive in Road Town, the capital of the British Virgin Islands (aka BVI) at 7:00am as scheduled. The town has 15,000 residents, according to a 2018 census. It’s located on the south coast of Tortola, the largest island of the BVI. Road Town gas 13,000 residents The entire island only has 23,000 inhabitants; the total population of BVI is only 28,000.  The name Road Town, according to Wikipedia “is derived from the nautical term ‘the
