We are rounding the island of Borneo, passing through the Karlmata Strait and into the Java Sea. Sumatra is on our starboard side and then so shall be the island of Java. It is shallow as seas go, with a mean depth of only 151 feet. During the last ice age, this was exposed dry land over which Asiatic fauna migrated into western Indonesia.
Today Steve finally finishes his posts on Hong Kong. For him, this is the major activity for the day. Sea Days are welcome for this opportunity alone, but it is also a chance to prepare for visits to upcoming ports.
Because I am posting almost four weeks after the day I am writing about, I depend on the ship’s daily newspaper, Oceania Cruises Currents, for reminders as to what we did. But there are no lectures scheduled that we would have attended, and no notes about any other activities.
The picture at the head of this post is taken from Deck 9 at sunset. This is the only clue I have that tells me we went up there to have cocktails with Brian O’Dell, Rich Rosenthal, Paul from Vancouver and some other regulars. Sometimes we do that. I can say with confidence that we had a good time.
I guess the rest of the day we just took it easy and looked forward to seeing one of the world’s premier tourist destinations, Bali, and learning about the island’s famous and enchanting culture. We arrive tomorrow at 1:00pm.
